Byrnes Communications Inc. was incorporated in 2002 with the express purpose of applying for and/or purchasing FM radio licenses in Canada. It started in 2004 by identifying several markets in Ontario that would benefit from a local radio station. Byrnes first applied in Woodstock, Ontario in late 2004. This created a competitive hearing to which 6 other companies responded. The hearing was held in June of 2005 and 80 days later Byrnes was awarded the Woodstock FM license (CRTC 2005-431). Heart FM was officially launched on April 10, 2006. Today CIHR-FM, known as 104.7 “Heart FM,” is the most listened to radio station in Oxford County. It focuses on Oxford County and its success is based on being local, employing staff who live in the area, and who are involved in the community. Heart FM became Canada’s first commercial HD Radio station launching on July 2015.
BCI has looked at a number of opportunities to purchase or apply for licenses to grow the business. BCI applied for an FM license in Burlington in 2011, but on October of 2015 the CRTC denied that application, ruling that Burlington is part of the Hamilton CMA and was adequately served by Hamilton radio stations. In 2017, BCI responded to a call to bring FM radio to Grimsby. Two other companies allied and a hearing was held in Toronto in November 2017. On 11 July 2018 the CRTC awarded that license to a Hamilton broadcaster. On 1 February 2018 BCI purchased CJED-FM Niagara Falls and CFLZ FM Fort Erie from Vista Radio Ltd. On 1 March 2018 105.1 The River Niagara Falls was launched as a Hot AC station and 101.1 More FM Fort Erie launched as a Classic Hits.
